UN Official Describes Gaza as a Scene of 'Complete Horror'

Martin Griffiths paint Gaza scenes of horror

Primary Evidence

Colleagues who reached the northern region depict distressing scenes of horror . Dead bodies lying on streets. Hungry people are resorting to halting trucks.  Griffiths communicated these scenes of horror to  the members of the UN Security Council to unfold human crisis.

Prospects of Peace

There are little chances of people returning to their homes because their residences are destroyed. This results in displacement of population.  Existing shelters are already overburdened, struggling to accommodate the increasing number of displaced individuals.

adding to the scenes of horror is the escalating risk of famine, attributed to the depletion of essential resources such as food and water.

State of Health in Ghaza

The health system has collapsed. Services like childbirth and vaccination for children, are compromised, contributing to a rise in infectious diseases. Humanitarian aid, crucial for addressing these pressing issues, faces significant impediments.

Aid Route

While aid is gradually entering Gaza through southern border crossings, the northern region has encountered obstacles. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that Israel has obstructed the delivery of vital supplies to northern Gaza. In response, Israel has accused the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency of insufficient effort and hindering progress.

Challenges to Humanitarian Efforts

Martin Griffiths, in a critical assessment, pointed out challenges faced by humanitarian efforts in the north. Delays, denials, and imposing impractical conditions have impeded the delivery of essential aid. Furthermore, he underscored the endangerment of aid workers due to a lack of adherence to the humanitarian notification system.

According to the reports humanitarian efforts in the region are hard to conduct because of limited access

Palestinians gather to receive food assistance at a distribution point in a refugee camp in Rafah, located in the southern Gaza Strip, on December 23, 2023, amid ongoing conflicts between Israel and the militant group Hamas.

Israel’s policy of instructing residents to evacuate their homes in anticipation of heightened military operations has faced criticism.

According to Martin Griffiths, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, evacuation orders are continuous. As ground operations progress southwards, reports indicate an intensification of aerial bombardments in areas designated for civilian relocation. This escalation has confined people to increasingly smaller areas, subjecting them to escalating violence, deprivation, inadequate shelter, and a scarcity of essential services.

Life Toll in war

The ongoing conflict has displaced up to 1.9 million people, constituting 85% of Gaza’s population, with many experiencing multiple displacements.

Griffiths also reminded members of the UN Security Council about the attack by Hamas and other armed groups on Israel on October 7, resulting in 1,200 casualties, thousands of injuries, and hundreds subjected to abhorrent sexual violence.

Rocket attacks persistently target populated areas in Israel, causing further civilian casualties and trauma.

Griffiths urged immediate action, emphasizing that the events since October 7 have left an enduring mark on our collective conscience, warning of its potential to become an indelible stain on our humanity.
