U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has named Morgan Ortagus as the Deputy Special Presidential Envoy for Middle East Peace. Ortagus, a prominent pro-Israel figure, will serve under Steven Witkoff, the newly appointed Special Envoy.
Trump announced the appointment on his platform, Truth Social, describing Ortagus as an essential addition to Witkoff’s team. “She will hopefully be an asset to Steve, a great leader and talent, as we seek to bring calm and prosperity to a very troubled region,” Trump stated. He expressed optimism about achieving quick results.
Ortagus previously served as the spokesperson for the U.S. State Department between 2019 and 2021. During that period, she played a key role in promoting Trump’s foreign policy agenda. She was also part of the Abraham Accords team, facilitating diplomatic agreements between Israel, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates.
In response to the appointment, Ortagus expressed gratitude and enthusiasm. “To be given the opportunity to once again represent my country and the Trump Administration in a crucial diplomatic role is a dream come true,” she posted on X. Ortagus emphasized the importance of U.S. leadership in fostering stability in the region.
Witkoff’s Leadership and Vision
Steven Witkoff, a real estate executive and a strong supporter of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was appointed as the Special Envoy for Middle East Peace in November. Witkoff’s selection reflects Trump’s continued focus on strengthening U.S.-Israel relations.
Witkoff is expected to lead efforts to expand diplomatic and economic cooperation between Israel and its neighbors. His appointment signals Trump’s commitment to deepening ties in the region. She will assist Witkoff in advancing these initiatives.
Ortagus’ Diplomatic Experience
She brings extensive experience to her new role. Prior to her time at the State Department, she worked as a financial intelligence analyst at the U.S. Treasury. From 2010 to 2011, she served as Deputy Treasury Attaché in Saudi Arabia.
Her background in both financial security and diplomacy positions her as a strategic asset. Ortagus is well-versed in Middle Eastern affairs, and her appointment aligns with Trump’s broader diplomatic goals.
Continued Focus on Middle East Peace
The Trump administration has consistently prioritized Middle East diplomacy. The Abraham Accords, one of Trump’s key foreign policy achievements, have reshaped regional alliances. The agreements normalized Israel’s relations with Bahrain and the UAE, opening pathways for economic cooperation.
Trump’s new appointments suggest further diplomatic efforts are on the horizon. Both Witkoff and Ortagus are expected to build on these foundations. Their focus will likely include fostering additional agreements and strengthening existing ties.
Ortagus highlighted the significance of peacebuilding in her remarks. “The most important thing under President Trump is that the U.S. brings peace and stability to a troubled region,” she said.
Future Diplomatic Prospects
Observers believe Trump’s appointments reflect a calculated strategy. By selecting figures closely aligned with his vision, Trump aims to secure diplomatic wins early in his second term. Ortagus’ return signals continuity in foreign policy, reinforcing established U.S. positions.
As the transition progresses, further appointments are expected to shape Trump’s diplomatic team. Ortagus and Witkoff’s partnership will likely play a central role in U.S. Middle East policy in the coming years.
