In the indictment brought against him by a New York grand jury, former president Donald Trump has been slammed with around 30 felony charges relating to alleged document fraud, according to NBC on Friday.
The Thursday-approved indictment at Manhattan Supreme Court is still under secret.
Trump will be charged in Manhattan court on Tuesday. He is the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024.
The indictment is believed to be connected to Trump’s repayment of Michael Cohen, his former lawyer and fixer, for a $130,000 hush money payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 presidential election, at least in part, if not entirely.
Trump’s payments to Cohen for that reason were listed by the Trump Organization as “legal expenditures.”
Under New York law, misclassifying business costs is a misdemeanour. If that is done to hide another act, it can be considered a felony.
Stephanie Clifford Daniels, whose real name is Daniels, was compensated to remain silent about her assertion that she had sex with Trump in 2006. He disputes what she says.
Trump is the first American president, living or dead, to be accused of a crime.
According to a Quinnipiac University poll issued this week, the majority of Americans think that Trump should not be allowed to run for president if he is accused of a crime.
But there is no law prohibiting Trump from running for president, while facing charges.
