In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves across India, a 22-year-old Muslim man named Mohammad Ishaq was lynched by a furious mob over allegations of stealing “prasad,” a religious offering, during a Hindu prayer event. The gruesome attack took place in New Delhi’s Sundar Nagri area, and the tragic loss has left Ishaq’s family devastated, shedding light on the alarming rise of mob violence in the country.
A Senseless Act of Violence
The harrowing incident unfolded at approximately 5 am on Tuesday, when Ishaq was confronted by an enraged mob. He was tied to an iron pole with a leather belt and subjected to brutal beatings, all because of suspicions that he had taken “prasad” from a prayer event organized by local Hindus to celebrate the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.
Ishaq’s father, Abdul Wajid, who sells vegetables for a living, expressed his profound grief, saying, “My son was killed because he ate prasad. Those who killed my son found it offensive that a Muslim touched their prasad.” He went on to explain that his Hindu customers often offered him “prasad,” and he accepted it without hesitation, seeing it as a gift from both “bhagwan” (God) and “Allah.”
Ishaq’s sister, Uzma, revealed the horrifying details of the attack, stating that her brother was lynched “for taking a banana.” She described how the mob left him tied to the pole, with injuries that included broken nails and severe cuts on his fingers. His condition was critical, and he was found by a compassionate neighbor who brought him home. Tragically, Ishaq succumbed to his injuries a few hours later, as his family chose not to take him to the hospital. The police were informed of the incident after his passing.
Outrage and Demands for Justice
As a video of the brutal assault circulated on social media, there was an outpouring of anger and calls for justice. The police swiftly responded by registering a case of murder and apprehending six individuals involved in the lynching. Joy N Tirkey, the police official in the area, confirmed, “The initial inquiry has found that a group of men stopped him on the suspicion that he was a thief and then they tied and beat him.”
Neighbors attested to Ishaq’s gentle nature and mental challenges. Mohammad Saleem, an autorickshaw driver from the same lane, praised Ishaq’s helpfulness, saying, “He was a good boy. He never said no. We would pay him 20 or 50 rupees for the job.” Ishaq’s father, Wajid, called for justice, saying, “We are so far satisfied with the police action, but we want the men who killed my son to receive the same fate.”
Rising Tensions and Concerns
This tragic incident adds to growing concerns over the rise in mob lynchings in India, particularly targeting Muslims. Critics argue that such violence has increased since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in 2014, although the government denies these allegations.
Mob lynchings often stem from suspicions of cow slaughter, as cows are considered sacred by some Hindus, leading to attacks on individuals, mainly Muslims. Sharjeel Usmani, a New Delhi-based Muslim student activist, stated, “Lynching a Muslim has become akin to a ritual, and that’s something Hindu leaders must think about.”
Calls for Unity and Compassion
Amidst the tragedy, there are calls for unity and compassion. The bereaved family’s neighbor, Bano, expressed a sense of isolation, saying, “They are poor people. They should be helped, but we know no one will come because we are Muslim.” This sentiment highlights the need for communities to come together, transcending religious boundaries, to combat such senseless violence and ensure justice for victims like Mohammad Ishaq.
