In a significant meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, President Xi Jinping reaffirmed the vital role of humanitarianism in bridging diverse civilizations. He extended China’s commitment to collaborate closely with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to make substantial contributions to the advancement of global peace and progress.

China’s Commitment to Global Humanitarianism

President Xi Jinping, during his meeting with ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, lauded the ICRC’s extensive humanitarian work, spanning 160 years, in safeguarding the lives and dignity of those affected by armed conflicts and violence worldwide. He expressed his appreciation for the organization’s significant contributions to world peace and progress.

In a world grappling with unprecedented changes and challenges, President Xi emphasized China’s dedication to cooperation with all nations, promoting shared solutions, and fostering a global community with a common destiny. He reiterated China’s initiatives, such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the Global Development Initiative, aimed at achieving economic development, improving livelihoods, and fostering mutually beneficial outcomes.

ICRC Lauds China’s Contribution to Humanitarian Cause

China’s active role in enhancing global governance and addressing humanitarian issues was acknowledged by President Xi. He emphasized that humanitarianism represents the most powerful consensus capable of uniting diverse civilizations. Xi drew parallels between traditional Chinese culture, characterized by values like “the benevolent person loves others,” and the principles underpinning the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

President Xi pointed out that China, by prioritizing its people, had achieved the largest victory over poverty in human history. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, China not only protected its citizens’ lives and health but also conducted a comprehensive global humanitarian assistance campaign. Xi reaffirmed that China remains a proactive advocate, participant, and contributor to the international humanitarian cause.

ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric Egger congratulated China for its exceptional recognition, with the highest number of recipients of the Florence Nightingale Medal this year. She highlighted that this recognition demonstrated China’s substantial progress in the development of the humanitarian cause.

Spoljaric praised the Belt and Road Initiative for its role in promoting global development and advancing the global humanitarian agenda. She expressed the ICRC’s eagerness to further deepen cooperation with China, jointly striving to contribute to world peace, development, and the humanitarian cause.

Florence Nightingale Medal Honors Chinese Nurses

The Florence Nightingale Medal, awarded biennially, stands as the premier international accolade for nurses and nursing aides displaying exceptional courage, dedication, and exemplary service. The ICRC announced this year’s 37 recipients in May. In Beijing, a ceremony and seminar were held to commemorate the seven Chinese honorees. Notably, China has nominated candidates for this honor since
