Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced his country’s commitment to rebuilding essential infrastructure in Gaza. Malaysia will construct a school, hospital, and mosque to support Palestinians affected by Israel’s war.
The announcement follows a ceasefire that began on January 19, ending months of Israeli airstrikes and ground operations. Anwar emphasized that the ceasefire must be accompanied by a plan for Gaza’s recovery. He stated that Malaysia would mobilize efforts to alleviate Palestinian suffering.
Devastation in Gaza
Since October 7, 2023, Israel’s military campaign has devastated Gaza. The war has killed more than 47,300 Palestinians, most of them women and children. More than 111,000 people have suffered injuries, and over two million have been displaced.
Thousands remain missing under the rubble of destroyed buildings. A humanitarian crisis has deepened, with food, water, and medical supplies critically low. The destruction has also targeted hospitals, schools, and residential areas, worsening the situation for civilians.
Malaysia’s Commitment to Gaza
Anwar stressed the need for long-term reconstruction in Gaza. His statement, posted on X, underscored Malaysia’s commitment to standing with Palestinians. He noted that rebuilding efforts must ensure lasting support beyond temporary aid.
Malaysia has consistently supported Palestine in diplomatic and humanitarian efforts. The latest initiative reinforces its role in assisting Gaza’s recovery. The school, hospital, and mosque will provide vital services for those struggling to rebuild their lives.
Legal Actions Against Israeli Leaders
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants in November 2024 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. The court charged them with war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is also reviewing a genocide case against Israel. The case accuses Israeli forces of committing atrocities in their military campaign against Gaza. Global human rights organizations have condemned the war’s impact on civilians.
Urgency for International Support
Anwar’s call for Gaza’s recovery aligns with international demands for reconstruction. Humanitarian groups have urged world leaders to take action in providing aid and rebuilding efforts.
The war has left Gaza’s infrastructure in ruins, with essential services barely functioning. Hospitals lack medical supplies, and displaced families struggle for shelter. International aid organizations warn of a worsening crisis without immediate support.
Malaysia’s initiative highlights the urgency of global contributions to Gaza’s reconstruction. Anwar’s announcement signals a commitment to long-term relief efforts in the region.
