Israeli Attempts to Minimize Civilian Casualties in Gaza Raise Concerns
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In the midst of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged that Israel’s efforts to safeguard civilians in Gaza have not been entirely successful. Despite persistent attempts by the Israeli military to evacuate civilians from the war-torn region, casualties persist, sparking concerns about the long-term impact on the affected population. In a recent interview with CBS News, Netanyahu emphasized the tragedy of any civilian death, asserting that Israel is striving to protect civilians while accusing Hamas of deliberately endangering them.

Leaflets and Evacuations: A Questionable Strategy

One strategy employed by Israel to protect civilians involves the distribution of leaflets urging Gaza residents to evacuate for their own safety. Netanyahu highlighted these efforts, stating, “We send leaflets, call them on their cell phones, and say: ‘leave.’ And many have left.” However, the effectiveness of this strategy remains questionable, as it is unclear where the evacuated individuals are expected to find safety amid the widespread conflict. The mass displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians has raised fears that it could result in a long-term humanitarian crisis.

Alarming Developments at al-Shifa Hospital

The Israeli military’s focus on Gaza’s al-Shifa Hospital has added a new dimension to the conflict. Amid claims by Hamas that the hospital is being wrongly targeted, the Israeli military reported retrieving the body of a female soldier from a building near the hospital. This comes after Hamas took captives, including the soldier, and shared images of her purported death following an Israeli airstrike. The discovery of a tunnel shaft and a vehicle containing weapons at the hospital has intensified tensions, with conflicting narratives emerging on the use of the hospital for military purposes.

International Concerns and Calls for Protection

As the conflict unfolds, international actors are expressing concerns over the escalating humanitarian crisis. Human Rights Watch emphasized the special protections hospitals hold under international humanitarian law, asserting that such protections can only be waived if harmful acts are proven to originate from the premises. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, on a visit to Israel, called on the country to do more to protect civilians in Gaza. With reliable sources confirming over 11,500 casualties, including more than 4,700 children, and two-thirds of Gaza’s population displaced, the urgency to address the humanitarian fallout is paramount.
