Iranian dissident rapper Toomaj Salehi, who gained international attention for his outspoken criticism of the Iranian regime, has been released from prison after over a year of imprisonment. The 32-year-old artist, who was sentenced to death earlier this year, was freed on December 1, 2024, following a turbulent legal battle and widespread international pressure.
A Controversial Arrest and Torture
Salehi, a metalworker from Isfahan, became a prominent voice during Iran’s 2022 uprising, using his rap lyrics to highlight the repression, injustice, and poverty plaguing the country. His criticism of the regime’s treatment of women and activists, particularly during the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests, led to his arrest in October 2022. The Iranian intelligence ministry accused him of being one of the leaders of the protests, leading to his violent detention.
While in custody, Salehi was subjected to severe torture and forced to make televised confessions, a common tactic used by Iranian authorities to suppress dissent. Despite the brutal treatment, Salehi’s resolve remained unshaken, and his music continued to serve as a platform for anti-government sentiments.
Escaping Death: From Sentence to Release
Initially sentenced to death in April 2024 by a revolutionary court for “spreading corruption on Earth,” Salehi’s case drew the attention of human rights organizations and governments worldwide. His sentence was overturned in June 2024 by Iran’s Supreme Court, which cited an “excess of legal punishment” and referred the case back to a lower court for resentencing. However, his legal troubles did not end there. In July 2024, a court sentenced Salehi to 75 months in prison for propaganda against the Islamic Republic.
Salehi was briefly released in November 2023 after posting bail, but was swiftly re-arrested after publishing a video in which he revealed the extent of the torture he endured. The video sparked outrage internationally, drawing condemnation from various human rights groups, celebrities, and organizations, including the U.S. State Department, which called for his immediate release.
In April 2024, following his death sentence, international pressure mounted, urging Iran to reconsider the harsh punishment. The media coverage and public outcry played a pivotal role in ensuring his survival, as the Iranian regime has often been known to backtrack on harsh decisions when subjected to international scrutiny.
A Symbol of Resistance and Struggle
Salehi’s release comes after months of activism, including the tragic suicide of Iranian journalist Kianoosh Sanjari, who had warned he would take his own life unless several political prisoners, including Salehi, were released. Sanjari’s death was followed by a hunger strike by fellow activist Hossein Ronaghi, who sewed his lips shut in a desperate attempt to draw attention to the plight of political prisoners. From his prison cell, Salehi urged Ronaghi to end his hunger strike, pleading with him not to risk his life.
In the wake of Sanjari’s death and the continued protests, Iran’s Supreme Court finally acquitted Salehi in mid-August 2024, a rare legal victory for dissidents in the country. His release was a direct result of both legal developments and the tireless efforts of activists and supporters who fought for his freedom.
Global Support and Condemnation of Iran’s Repression
Salehi’s case garnered widespread attention from around the world. High-profile figures, including actress Nazanin Boniadi, entrepreneur Richard Branson, and organizations such as the Recording Academy, publicly called for his release. The U.S. government, in particular, condemned Iran’s brutal treatment of its citizens and urged the regime to respect basic human rights.
Salehi’s freedom is a symbol of hope for many activists and dissidents in Iran who continue to resist the authoritarian regime. His music, which has always been a tool for social change, now represents the resilience of those who continue to fight for justice and freedom in the face of overwhelming adversity.
As Iran’s human rights record remains under international scrutiny, Salehi’s release highlights both the risks faced by those who dare to speak out and the power of global solidarity in the fight for freedom.
