Iran and Russia to Further Cooperation on Nuclear Projects
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Iran and Russia have announced plans to expand their partnership in nuclear energy, focusing on the development of both small and large nuclear power plants. Alexei Likhachev, the executive director of Russia’s Rosatom, revealed the plans during ongoing discussions between the two nations.

Likhachev stated that Iran intends to strengthen its cooperation with Russia for the construction and commissioning of nuclear facilities. Negotiations for building another large nuclear power plant in Iran are expected to begin soon.

Focus on Small Nuclear Power Plants

Both sides are working on agreements regarding small nuclear power plants. Likhachev disclosed that Russia has already sent a protocol to Iran to adjust existing terms and enhance collaboration in this area. These plants could contribute to Iran’s goal of diversifying its energy production while reducing environmental impact.

Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant Progress

The Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) continues to be a significant part of Iran’s nuclear energy program. The first unit of the plant became operational in 2011, generating up to 1,000 megawatt-hours of electricity. Since 2013, this unit has produced over 65 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity.

In 2017, construction began on the second and third units of the Bushehr NPP, covering an area of 50 hectares. Each unit is designed to generate 1,057 megawatts of electricity upon completion. Once operational, these units are expected to save 10 million barrels of crude oil or 1.6 billion cubic meters of gas annually. They will also prevent the release of seven million tons of polluting gases each year.

Currently, the construction of the second and third units is 17% complete. Despite international sanctions and pressure, the work continues with the support of Russian expertise.

Strategic Cooperation Amid Sanctions

Iran’s partnership with Russia in nuclear energy remains strong despite Western sanctions. The collaboration highlights Iran’s commitment to expanding its energy capacity while reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Russia’s involvement underscores its strategic interest in maintaining strong ties with Iran in critical sectors.

The joint effort to construct and operate small and large nuclear plants reflects the mutual benefits of this partnership. For Iran, these projects align with its long-term energy goals and environmental commitments. For Russia, it strengthens its geopolitical influence and technological presence in the region.

Future Prospects

Negotiations for new nuclear power plants are set to deepen Iran-Russia cooperation. These talks signify a growing alliance that could shape the energy landscape in the region. Both nations remain determined to overcome external challenges and continue their nuclear collaboration.

As the construction of Bushehr’s new units progresses, Iran is poised to achieve greater energy independence. With Russian assistance, the country is advancing its nuclear infrastructure, paving the way for a more sustainable energy future.

This partnership not only enhances Iran’s energy capacity but also showcases the resilience of international cooperation in the face of global challenges.
