Indonesia defends joining BRICS, vows to be ‘bridge-builder’ amid shifting alliances
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Indonesia officially became the 11th member of the BRICS bloc, marking a significant milestone in its foreign policy. Foreign Minister Sugiono described this achievement as the result of decades of consistent and resilient diplomacy. He emphasized that Indonesia’s inclusion reflects its free and active foreign policy approach. The announcement followed Brazil’s confirmation of Indonesia’s membership earlier this week.

A Role as a Bridge-Builder

Indonesia aims to act as a bridge-builder between developing economies and Indo-Pacific nations. Sugiono stressed the country’s commitment to easing geo-economic and geopolitical tensions. He noted that Indonesia will remain proactive in reducing rivalry on the global stage. President Prabowo Subianto has also highlighted this membership as part of Indonesia’s strategy to maintain balanced relations with global powers.

Global Dynamics and Regional Rivalries

Indonesia’s entry into BRICS comes at a time of heightened great-power rivalry in Southeast Asia. Both the United States and China continue to expand their influence in the region. Sugiono stated that Indonesia’s move to join BRICS aligns with its intention to “befriend everyone” while maintaining its sovereignty in global affairs.

A Decisive Step in Jakarta’s Foreign Policy

Indonesia’s membership was formalized after the establishment of its new government in October 2024. The bloc had approved Indonesia’s inclusion at the BRICS summit in Johannesburg in August 2023. This step showcases Jakarta’s long-term commitment to strengthening its international presence. Sugiono assured that Indonesia will use this platform to promote inclusivity and cooperation among global south nations.

BRICS: A Growing Global Influence

BRICS now accounts for 40% of the world’s population and 35% of global GDP. The bloc continues to expand its influence, with Indonesia joining alongside 13 new partner countries. These include nations like Belarus, Bolivia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Uzbekistan. BRICS, under Brazil’s current chairmanship, has become a significant player in shaping global economic policies.

President Prabowo’s Vision for Indonesia

President Prabowo Subianto has supported Indonesia’s BRICS membership as a strategic move. He views it as an opportunity for the Southeast Asian powerhouse to play a greater role in global affairs. Prabowo reiterated Indonesia’s focus on fostering peace, stability, and development through its international partnerships.

Implications for Indonesia and the Region

Indonesia’s inclusion in BRICS signals its rising importance on the global stage. This move strengthens its economic and political leverage while highlighting its diplomatic achievements. Analysts believe Indonesia’s role in the bloc could promote greater collaboration between Southeast Asia and other BRICS nations. It could also help bridge gaps between developed and developing economies.

A Strategic Shift for a Better Future

Indonesia’s decision to join BRICS aligns with its vision of a balanced and inclusive global order. This move showcases its commitment to addressing global challenges while promoting regional stability. As the world watches, Indonesia prepares to leverage its membership to foster peace and economic growth on a global scale.
