On May 20, the fifth phase of India’s monumental electoral exercise is taking place. This phase brings the national election, characterized by weeks of intense campaigning and varied voter turnout, closer to its conclusion.
Overview of the Fifth Phase
In this pivotal phase, voters in 49 constituencies across six states and two union territories are heading to the polls. Among the key candidates are Rahul Gandhi, Congress party leader, contesting in Rae Bareli, a long-held family seat in Uttar Pradesh (UP). Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is also seeking re-election in Lucknow, the state capital.
The election process began on April 19 and will wrap up on June 1. With over 969 million registered voters, this extensive exercise aims to elect 543 representatives to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of Parliament. The final vote count will be conducted on June 4.
Voter Turnout So Far
The initial four phases saw the following turnout rates: 66.1% on April 19, 66.7% on April 26, 61% on May 7, and 67.3% on May 13. Despite these figures, voter enthusiasm seems lower than anticipated overall.
Major Political Coalitions
India’s political scene is dominated by two major coalitions: the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), a coalition of 26 parties led by the Congress party.
Regions Participating in the Fifth Phase
Voters in the following regions are casting their ballots in this phase:
•Jharkhand: 3 out of 14 constituencies
•Odisha: 5 out of 21 constituencies
•Uttar Pradesh: 14 out of 80 constituencies
•Bihar: 5 out of 40 constituencies
•Maharashtra: 13 out of 48 constituencies
•West Bengal: 7 out of 42 constituencies
•Ladakh: The lone constituency
•Jammu and Kashmir: 1 out of 5 constituencies
Significant Constituencies to Watch
Rae Bareli and Amethi (Uttar Pradesh): These constituencies are significant for the Nehru-Gandhi family. Rahul Gandhi is contesting Rae Bareli, a seat previously held by his mother, Sonia Gandhi, while in Amethi, Congress loyalist KL Sharma challenges federal Minister Smriti Irani, who defeated Rahul Gandhi in 2019.
Kaiserganj and Faizabad (Uttar Pradesh): Kaiserganj is notable as BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has been denied a ticket due to sexual harassment allegations, with his son Karan Bhushan now the candidate. In Faizabad, home to the controversial Ayodhya Ram temple, BJP’s Lallu Singh faces Awadhesh Prasad of the Samajwadi Party.
Saran and Hajipur (Bihar): In Saran, Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter, Rohini Acharya, contests against BJP’s Rajiv Pratap Rudy. In Hajipur, Shiv Chandra Ram of the Rashtriya Janata Dal challenges Chirag Paswan, who holds his late father’s seat.
Ladakh: The union territory of Ladakh is witnessing protests against the BJP for not fielding its sitting MP, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal. The Congress hopes to capitalize on local grievances, promising to include Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, which would protect the region’s tribal status and benefits.
Election Schedule
Polling stations will open at 7 am and close at 6 pm local time. Voters already in line at closing time will be allowed to cast their ballots. The comprehensive election results for all phases will be announced on June 4.
As the nation approaches the end of this extensive electoral process, the outcomes of this phase are expected to significantly impact India’s political landscape in the coming years.
