The International Day of Human Fraternity, which takes place on February 4 every year, aims to encourage respect for all cultures and religions. The day also emphasizes interfaith harmony, communication, and respect.
A fraternity is an organization of persons who have similar interests in common. Fraternity can also refer to a group’s culture of assistance to one another. The United Nations aspires for these concepts to become more widely accepted. Instead of concentrating on our differences, let’s consider what makes us human instead.
It is more crucial than ever to spread knowledge about appreciating many cultures and beliefs in a time when intolerance appears to be at an all-time high. Global public acceptance and appreciation for cultural variety must exist for this to happen. Education, especially in the classroom, is a key tool for achieving this. It’s also critical to recognize how tolerance and respect for one another advance human fraternity. Often, this must first take place at the local, regional, and national levels before it can happen on a global scale.
HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL DAY OF HUMAN FRATERNITY
Pope Francis collaborated with Sheikh Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar (Cairo), to produce a very remarkable text. They jointly disclosed the existence of this document on February 4, 2019, during Pope Francis’ visit to the United Arab Emirates, six months after it was first drafted.
The Higher Committee of Human Fraternity, which seeks to put the concepts in this declaration into practice, was founded as a result of a paper called the “Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together.” Most of the members of this council are representatives from various religious and scholarly communities around the world. Members of this Higher Committee met with U.N.
General Secretary António Guterres in December 2019 to discuss a proposal made in February by the Grand Imam and the Pope. The World Day of Human Fraternity will henceforth occur. In a short time, the U.N. General Assembly declared February 4 to be the World Day of Human Fraternity. Volkan Bozkir, the president of the General Assembly, made the announcement.
