G-77 Ministerial Conference (15-16 December 2022)

Pakistan is hosting the G-77 and China Ministerial Conference being held in New York. Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari urged the body to induct equity in international economic relations. He said developing countries continued to suffer from the severe impacts of climate change. The meeting is being held with the aim to agree on the “urgent and emergency measures required”. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhatti has said the SDG financing gap has enlarged from $2.5 trillion in 2019 to over $4 trillion today.

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said the developing world also needed to recover from the loss and damage from climate impacts and adapt to avoid future impacts. He thanked the UN Secretary-General for setting up the Emergency Task Force and urged the WFP to ensure food supplies for the 250 million in hunger. China’s foreign minister has called for a rapid installation of sustainable infrastructure – energy, transportation, housing, manufacturing, and agriculture, needing an estimated investment of $1 trillion per year. He stressed the need for adopting an international technology agreement, aligned with the SDGs, through inclusive negotiations. Besides, he said it was vital to adopt an equitable international information technology regime serving to bridge the digital divide.

However, The Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the UN hosted a commemorative event titled Remembering Victims of Army Public School, Peshawar Terrorist Attack at the UN Headquarters on Friday. The event was part of the UN Office of Counter Terrorism’s Memories campaign that was launched in Malaga, Spain in May 2022 and also reflected in the first UN Global Congress of Victims of Terrorism in New York in September 2022. The Foreign Minister said the shock of this attack mobilized the Pakistani nation and motivated us to eliminate terrorism from our soil. Massive military operations were undertaken to wipe out terrorists from our country. Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif has said Pakistan has shared with the UN Secretary-General and Security Council a dossier containing concrete evidence of external support for the TTP and other terrorist groups working against Pakistan. Even so, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said we hope and expect that the new Afghan authorities will be able to prevent cross-border terrorist attacks against Pakistan as they promised in the Doha Agreement and subsequent policy declarations.
