Ex-Trump Adviser Calls for Sanctions on ICC Over Israel
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Amidst escalating tensions between the United States, Israel, and the International Criminal Court (ICC), Robert O’Brien, former National Security Advisor to President Trump, has emerged as a vocal advocate for imposing sanctions on ICC officials involved in seeking arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. O’Brien’s remarks come during a multi-day visit to Jerusalem, where he met with Israeli leaders to discuss the ICC’s actions and their potential ramifications for U.S.-Israel relations.

In an exclusive interview with Reuters, O’Brien emphasized the need for decisive action against what he termed the ICC’s “irrational decision” regarding Israeli officials. He proposed imposing sanctions on ICC officials, including freezing their assets and imposing travel restrictions, as a means of demonstrating firmness in response to what he perceived as unjust targeting of Israeli leaders by the international court. O’Brien’s stance reflects broader concerns within the U.S. political landscape regarding the ICC’s jurisdiction and its implications for U.S. allies like Israel.

Accompanying O’Brien on his visit to Israel were former U.S. Ambassador to the UAE John Rakolta and former Ambassador to Switzerland Ed McMullen. Their presence marked a rare instance of Trump allies engaging in diplomatic efforts abroad, underscoring the significance of the discussions with Israeli leaders. Throughout their meetings, O’Brien and his delegation engaged in detailed discussions with Netanyahu and other political figures, exploring potential avenues for addressing the ICC’s actions and advancing U.S.-Israel relations in the face of mounting challenges.

The timing of O’Brien’s visit is particularly notable, as it coincides with heightened tensions between Israel and the Biden administration over the ongoing conflict in Gaza. While O’Brien commended Israel’s military actions in response to Hamas aggression, he also acknowledged the complexities of protecting civilians in conflict zones. Despite differences of opinion within the Biden administration, O’Brien remained steadfast in his support for Israel and expressed optimism about the potential for further normalization efforts in the Middle East.

One of the key topics of discussion during O’Brien’s visit was the proposal to impose sanctions on ICC officials involved in targeting Israeli leaders. O’Brien’s support for such measures reflects a broader trend within the U.S. political landscape, where bipartisan criticism of the ICC’s actions has emerged. The proposed sanctions, which could include freezing assets and imposing travel restrictions, are seen as a means of holding the ICC accountable for what many perceive as overreach in its jurisdiction.

In addition to addressing the ICC’s actions, O’Brien and his delegation also discussed broader issues related to U.S.-Israel relations and regional security. The visit provided an opportunity for in-depth discussions with Israeli leaders about the challenges facing the region and potential paths forward. Despite the complexities of the geopolitical landscape, O’Brien remained optimistic about the prospects for further engagement and cooperation between the United States and Israel.

As O’Brien’s visit to Israel draws to a close, the discussions and insights gained during this trip are likely to have a lasting impact on U.S. foreign policy towards the region. By advocating for sanctions on ICC officials and reaffirming support for Israel, O’Brien has sent a clear message about the importance of defending U.S. allies and upholding international norms. As tensions continue to simmer in the Middle East, the need for diplomatic engagement and decisive action remains as pressing as ever.
