Chaos Erupts as Protesters Storm Dagestan Airport Over Israel Flight
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Hundreds of enraged protesters descended on Makhachkala airport in Russia’s Dagestan region on Sunday. Their ostensible motive was to vehemently oppose the arrival of a flight from Israel, a manifestation of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This shocking incident left the airport in disarray, disrupted air travel, and triggered clashes with law enforcement personnel. What exactly unfolded at this pivotal moment?

Airport Invasion Unleashes Chaos

As the angry crowd broke through security barriers, chaos ensued at Makhachkala airport. The rioters not only breached the airport’s defenses but also managed to infiltrate the runway, raising alarming security concerns. Security forces eventually expelled them, but not without consequences – nine police officers sustained injuries, two of whom required hospitalization. This breach, however, wasn’t without its own repercussions as more than 150 active participants in the unrest have been identified, with 60 of them subsequently arrested, according to Russia’s interior ministry.

Disturbing Incidents Unfold

Social media was inundated with footage of terrified passengers scrambling back onto their plane amidst the runway commotion. Beyond the chaos on the tarmac, videos also depicted protesters forcefully breaking glass doors and swarming through the airport. More alarmingly, some among the crowd were caught chanting anti-Jewish slogans, waving Palestinian flags, and even inspecting the passports of arriving passengers. These disturbing actions add a concerning dimension to the already tumultuous situation.

International Ramifications and Appeals for Calm

The timing of this incident is particularly sensitive. It occurred as Israel intensified its ground operations in the Gaza Strip while sustaining heavy aerial bombardment. The conflict has exacted a devastating toll, with over 8,000 Palestinians, including 3,324 children, reported killed since the war began. On the other side, Israeli officials have reported at least 1,400 casualties among their own population and foreign nationals. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office issued a statement demanding the Russian law enforcement authorities protect Israeli citizens and Jews, condemning the rioters and incitement against them.

Furthermore, reports emerged that a Jewish center in the nearby Kabardino-Balkaria republic was set on fire, as tensions flared.

Amidst these troubling developments, Russia’s civilian aviation agency, Rosaviatsia, announced that the airfield had been cleared of unauthorized individuals, but the airport’s reopening to incoming flights remains tentatively scheduled for November 6.

The local government in Dagestan, with its Muslim-majority population, has urged citizens to maintain composure and refrain from participating in such protests. They warned protesters via Telegram not to engage in illegal activities or obstruct airport operations while expressing solidarity with the suffering Palestinian population. The Supreme Mufti of Dagestan, Sheikh Akhmad Afandi, also called for restraint, emphasizing that this complex issue requires a different approach, urging patience and calm.

Lastly, the United States government weighed in on the situation. Adrienne Watson, a spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, condemned the incident and expressed unequivocal support for the Jewish community. She underscored the global surge in antisemitism, reflecting the broader international concern surrounding these events.
