Canada Commits $21 Million to Aid Vulnerable Afghan Refugees in Central Asia
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a significant humanitarian move, the Canadian government has pledged 21 million Canadian dollars through the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to support the most vulnerable Afghan refugees seeking safety in Central Asia and Pakistan. This contribution reflects Canada’s commitment to addressing the urgent needs of displaced Afghans and fostering their integration into host communities.

Regional Support for Vulnerable Populations:
The allocated resources will fund a three-year regional project aimed at assisting governments and local organizations in responding to the protection, health, and integration needs of Afghan nationals in five countries: Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. This comprehensive approach underscores Canada’s dedication to addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by displaced Afghan populations.

Focus Areas of Support:

Integration through Local Services: The funding will support the integration of Afghan nationals by expanding local basic services in alignment with national policies. This includes initiatives to improve livelihoods, ensure social cohesion, and promote peaceful coexistence with host communities.

Enhancing Access to Services: Canada’s support will contribute to enhancing Afghans’ access to multi-sectoral services, with a particular focus on health. This involves growing the knowledge and skills of health and non-health stakeholders on health security at borders.

Canada’s Commitment to Humanitarian Assistance:
Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, Marc Miller, emphasized Canada’s commitment to humanitarian aid and the long-standing tradition of responding to the needs of vulnerable populations. He highlighted the positive contributions refugees make to societies and economies, reaffirming Canada’s dedication to international assistance, resettlement, and integration.

IOM Director General’s Appreciation:
IOM Director General, Amy Pope, expressed gratitude for Canada’s partnership and valued the ongoing collaboration with the IOM. The funding from Canada is seen as a generous act of solidarity towards neighboring countries hosting vulnerable Afghans. This commitment reflects the shared global responsibility to “leave no one behind” in times of crisis.

Empowering Local Authorities:
A fundamental aspect of the initiative is the focus on enhancing the capabilities of national and local authorities in safeguarding the fundamental rights of migrants. This approach recognizes the importance of empowering local entities to address the unique challenges faced by displaced populations.

Canada’s substantial financial commitment to aid vulnerable Afghan refugees in Central Asia reinforces the nation’s role as a compassionate global partner. By addressing the immediate needs of displaced Afghans and supporting their integration, Canada contributes to fostering stability and resilience in the face of humanitarian challenges.
