Biden Expresses Concern Over Washington Turmoil Impact on Aid to Ukraine
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Amidst the political turmoil brewing in Washington, President Joe Biden has voiced his apprehension about the potential disruption of crucial U.S. aid to Ukraine. This concern arises following the ousting of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, as Biden underscores the paramount importance of maintaining unwavering support for Kyiv. In a recent statement, Biden emphasized the need for Republicans to put aside internal disagreements and rally behind the “critically important” assistance that Ukraine requires.

Bipartisan Support for Ukraine Aid Amid Political Turmoil

President Biden’s expression of worry stems from the ongoing political turbulence within the Republican Party, which raises doubts about the future of funding for Ukraine’s battle against the Russian invasion. While addressing reporters, Biden acknowledged his concerns, stating, “It does worry me.” He pointed out that a majority of members from both parties in the House and Senate have voiced their support for Ukraine’s funding. However, the recent congressional deal to avert a government shutdown did not include fresh funding for Ukraine, further complicating the situation due to McCarthy’s unexpected departure.

The contenders vying to replace McCarthy exhibit a range of views, with hard-right Republican Jim Jordan being particularly skeptical about funding Ukraine. Given the timing, the White House issued a warning that aid could run out within months, just as Ukraine endeavors to advance its offensive against Russia before the harsh winter conditions set in. Biden hinted at the possibility of alternative means to secure funding, although he refrained from providing specific details.

White House Warns of Looming Aid Shortage for Ukraine

The urgency of the situation was emphasized as President Biden disclosed his plans to receive a briefing on Ukraine from his national security team, which would feature the newly appointed top U.S. military officer, Gen Charles “CQ” Brown. This shift in tone comes after Biden had conveyed his confidence in passing fresh aid during a call with allies just a day prior.

“I’m going to be announcing very shortly a major speech I’m going to make on this issue, and why it’s critically important for the United States and our allies that we keep our commitment,” Biden affirmed, without specifying a date for the upcoming speech. The President’s commitment to supporting Ukraine in its battle against Russia’s full-scale invasion remains unwavering, albeit the challenges posed by the political climate in Washington.

Global Allies Reiterate Confidence in U.S. Commitment to Ukraine

Despite the apprehension expressed by President Biden, global allies, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, remain steadfast in their belief that the United States will continue to provide essential support to Ukraine. Chancellor Scholz, following a phone call with Biden and other key allies, stated, “I am very convinced that the American Congress will make the necessary support for Ukraine possible.”

Scholz further underscored his confidence in the bipartisan support for Ukraine aid within the U.S. political process. “The message of the President was that one can absolutely continue to count on the U.S. also on this issue in the future,” Scholz affirmed, highlighting the enduring commitment of the United States to Ukraine’s cause.

Notably, Washington has committed over $43 billion in military assistance to Kyiv since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, with Congress approving a total of $113 billion in aid, including humanitarian assistance. Germany, the second-largest supplier of military aid to Ukraine after the United States, continues to stand by Ukraine in this critical time.
