Tens of Thousands Flee Southern Gaza as Israeli Offensive Intensifies
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a harrowing turn of events, the Gaza Strip is witnessing a mass exodus of its population as the Israeli military intensifies its ground offensive, transforming northern Gaza into what the United Nations describes as a “hell on earth.” Over the past two days, more than 100,000 Palestinians have fled from the north to the south, navigating perilous conditions on foot as they escape the relentless attacks. This unprecedented humanitarian crisis is marked by civilians, including children and the elderly, becoming targets in the crossfire.

Unprecedented Humanitarian Crisis Unfolds

As the conflict between Israel and Gaza escalates, a mass exodus is underway in the embattled region, with over 100,000 Palestinians forced to abandon their homes in the north for the relative safety of the south. The relentless Israeli ground offensive, marked by fierce battles and air raids, has plunged densely populated urban neighborhoods, including Gaza City, into chaos.

Civilians Targeted Amidst Urban Warfare

In an alarming twist, civilians, including children, the wounded, and the elderly, are fleeing on foot, with meager belongings in tow. Disturbingly, reports reveal that Israeli forces are targeting these desperate refugees as they attempt to reach the southern regions. The conflict has reached a critical point, with Israeli troops pushing deeper into the heart of Gaza City, leaving the population, already grappling with the horrors of war, in dire straits.

UN’s Grim Assessment – ‘Hell on Earth’ in Northern Gaza

The United Nations, grappling with the severity of the situation, has declared the north of Gaza a “hell on earth.” Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), expressed the organization’s inability to deliver aid to the affected areas. With Israeli forces closing in on key locations, including Al-Shifa Hospital, the UN warns of an unfolding humanitarian catastrophe, underscoring the urgent need for international intervention.

Amidst this turmoil, the call for accountability grows louder. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has called for an investigation into what he terms Israel’s use of “high-impact explosive weapons” causing indiscriminate destruction. As the conflict rages on, the numbers tell a tragic tale – over 11,000 Palestinians, including 4,506 children, have lost their lives in Gaza since the conflict’s inception, further highlighting the urgent need for a resolution to this devastating crisis.
