On Tuesday, the leaders of Egypt, Jordan, and Palestine emphasised the importance of preserving “legitimate” Palestinian rights and continuing joint efforts to achieve comprehensive, just, and permanent peace in the region.
During a tripartite summit in Cairo, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, Jordan’s King Abdullah II, and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas discussed the Palestinian issue in light of recent developments in the occupied Palestinian territories.
According to a statement, the three leaders agreed to keep working together to achieve a comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution, “which embodies an independent and sovereign Palestinian state on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital,” in accordance with international law, international resolutions, and the Arab Peace Initiative.
They also emphasised the need for the international community to protect the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights, as well as to stop illegal unilateral Israeli actions that undermine the two-state solution and opportunities for just and comprehensive peace.
These measures “include settlements, confiscation of Palestinian lands, demolition of homes, displacement of Palestinians from their homes, continuous raids into Palestinian cities, and violations of Jerusalem’s historical and legal status and sanctities,” according to the statement.
They emphasised the importance of preserving Jerusalem’s historical and legal status, as well as its Islamic and Christian sanctuaries, uniting Palestinians to end internal divisions, and taking effective measures to alleviate the deteriorating living conditions in the Gaza Strip.
The leaders also emphasised the importance of international support for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East in order for the agency to continue providing essential services to the refugees.
They agreed to continue intensive consultations at all levels within the Egyptian-Jordanian-Palestinian coordination framework to promote the restart of peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians.
