The Third Committee of the UN General Assembly has approved four resolutions that Pakistan submitted on behalf of the Group of 77 (developing nations) and China. These resolutions address the issues of racism, xenophobia, and related intolerance, social development, the International Year of the Family, and ageing.
The Panel, which deals with social, humanitarian, and cultural issues, unanimously adopted three of the four draughts presented by Ambassador Aamir Khan, the deputy permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN. However, a vote was taken on the proposal to eliminate racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and other related intolerance after Israel, the US, and the UK objected to some of its anti-semitic languages. The text received 126 yes votes, 17 no votes, and 36 abstentions.
The 193-member Assembly would show remorse for the injustices done against millions of people as a result of slavery, colonialism, apartheid, genocide, and other catastrophes under the parameters of the proposal. Additionally, it would urge States to administer reparatory justice if they haven’t previously.
Ambassador Aamir Khan introduced the text on behalf of the G77/China and emphasised the group’s worries about the rise of racism and associated problems in all spheres of life while urging States to combat antisemitism and Islamophobia.
