According to the SNAI prisons agency a total of 43 prisoners broke the prison in Northern Ecuador on Monday. This escape is linked to the ongoing military operations in the country.
President Daniel Noboa, in response to violence, declared a 60-day state of emergency, accompanied by a night-time curfew and the categorization of 22 criminal groups as terrorists.
The recent escalation of violence, encompassing incidents such as armed individuals storming a live TV news broadcast, explosions in various cities, and the abduction of police officers, is perceived as a reaction to President Noboa’s initiatives aimed at addressing Ecuador’s profound security crisis.
Security forces, spanning both police and military personnel, are currently stationed in penitentiaries nationwide following the release of approximately 200 abducted guards and administrative officials from at least seven prisons over the weekend.
The recent jailbreak occurred in Esmeraldas, a city proximate to the border with Colombia, with the SNAI revealing that 48 inmates had escaped during a search operation conducted by some 2,000 members of Ecuador’s security forces on Sunday.
Subsequent to a comprehensive inspection, it was revealed that 48 inmates had successfully escaped, as disclosed in the statement by the SNAI. The statement further highlighted the successful recapture of five prisoners,
The statement regrettably acknowledged the death of one inmate within the prison facility, with no elaboration on specific details.
Since the declaration of emergency, the government reports that security forces have apprehended over 1,500 individuals and executed 41 operations targeting identified terrorist groups.
A subsequent government statement affirmed the continuation of operations across Ecuador throughout the current week.
The government’s unequivocal objective, as articulated in an independent statement, is to exhibit unwavering determination against those individuals who have instigated terror and inflicted harm upon citizens.
President Noboa, elected with a mandate to restore security, has pledged to confine gang leaders to newly established high-security prisons, among other proposed measures.
